TESCO is facing $5.6 billion equal pay claim, Largest ever in UK
TESCO, which is the most loved and the biggest retail chain in United Kingdom, is facing UKs biggest ever equal pay claim. The supermarket chain might end up paying 4 billion pounds in compensations as per the bill. It has been revealed that around 1000 TESCO employees have apparently contacted a law firm called Leigh Day. The law firm is expected to take action in favor of the employees who have contacted it. The firm said that it will begin taking preliminary lawful steps for 100 employees in this week. Women staff members, who work at TESCO’s distribution centers, have claimed that their fellow male colleague are paid more for the same work. Law firm Leigh Day revealed that the average female hourly pay at TESCO is 8 pounds or $ 11, whereas the average pay for men can reach as high as 11 pounds or $15.40.
The disparity in women and men salary at TESCO also shows that men have a higher yearly earnings as compared to women. On average the male staff earns 5000 pounds more, per annum, than their female counterparts. Furthermore, Leigh Day believes that the disparity in wages has affected as many as 200,000 female staff members at TESCO. The retailer owns 20,000 pounds per workers which signals to the fact that it has to pay millions of pounds in compensation. The impact of this payout will also be seen on TESCO revenue and cash flow in the coming years.
Meanwhile, conciliation service ACAS has helped file the initial claims. The legal process is predicted to be time consuming and the workers might have to wait for several years in order to hear the final verdict. The supermarket chain, TESCO said it has not yet received the details of this claim. The company added that they have not yet made any comments regarding this issue because they haven’t received the claim yet. The supermarket chain also said that it is a place where culture of equality is promoted.
